Enhancing fan engagement in the Stubios Greenlight system

Redesigned the Greenlight system to make fan actions more engaging, meaningful, and trackable, bridging the gap between participation and recognition.

Fan actions were invisible in Stubios, breaking the engagement flow. I designed interactions that visualized contributions and built emotional connection.

Greenlight is Stubios’ fan-driven model where audiences watch, like, comment, and vote on short-form pitches to help decide which projects move forward. Each action earns points, bringing creators closer to getting their projects greenlit.

In the Greenlight system, fans could watch, like, and vote on content, but had no space for conversation or feedback. Without seeing the impact of their actions, many lost interest, leading to lower participation and weaker creator support.

02 Benchmarking research
on fan engagement platforms

We analyzed TikTok, YouTube, and Twitch to learn how instant feedback, community features, and real-time rewards encourage participation.

03 From research
to design directions

Audits showed tracked actions, benchmarking showed how to make them valued. We set two directions—social interaction and fan feedback—and used an impact–effort matrix to prioritize ideas.

We tested each layout step-by-step, addressing two main issues: inaccurate Join the chat button placement and unclear button-to-comment grouping. Through these iterations, we refined the design and selected the third (carded layout) for its clear grouping and improved accuracy.

This approach makes engagement easier for fans, ensures actions are clearly linked to their source, and allows Stubios to accurately track participation within the Greenlight point system.

A slide-up comment feed was placed over short-form content. Tapping a comment opens a thread centered on it, with a top tab showing the source comment.

By embedding high-signal actions into one unified card, we turned a single comment into a dynamic entry point for measurable, fan-driven impact.

We explored multiple leaderboard formats to find what best drives fan motivation. Option C emerged as the most balanced, showing current and goal points together—e.g., “14,981 out of 15,000.” This simple visual made progress clear and turned numbers into real motivation for continued support.

The leaderboard highlights race completion at the top and displays project rankings, points, and avatars in a clear list format. Fans can confirm their support led to real impact, reinforcing Stubios’s collaborative creation model.

Learnings on Design Methodology

Rather than focusing solely on UI improvements, approaching the problem at a system level—connecting the fan journey with participation structures—had a greater impact on engagement.

A hypothesis-driven design approach helped clarify feature priorities and led to measurable outcomes.

Opportunities for Future Expansion

Beyond real-time feedback, there is potential to expand fan contribution structures through features like 1:1 creator-fan interactions and collaborative editing tools.

In addition to comment-based features, I’d like to explore new participation models such as in-video live reactions and highlight voting.
